Pancho Escaler's Photography Workshop: Homework

I have been the beneficiary of so much generosity last weekend at the Justitia and the Chroma photography studio along Amorsolo Street.

Thank you to:
> Sarj Suguitan for making it possible to attend despite limited resources
> Ipe Closa for lending me his Canon Digital Rebel XT
> Trish Zuñiga for being the point person of The Palladium
> all the other participants for their votes and comments

> Pancho Escaler for reminding us that a good photograph is an amalgamation of technical competence, something that communicates the photographer's intent and makes a statement.

The following photographs were shot in my early years with Fuji Proplus/Kodak T-Max/Colpan 21 film and my dad's 2-decade old Nikon FE + Mark Barretto's Minolta X-700.

About the Photographs:
A 9-month-pregnant Selene Denolo (UPLB Filipiniana Dance Troupe), the Paoay church in Ilocos Norte, a child in Quezon after the typhoon, a Marcos loyalist at the Balay ti Amianan and a shoe repairman along Avenida in...

This year is stacked with some of Japan’s most critically acclaimed films. Here’s a quick look at the films on exhibit at this year’s festival:

FEATURED FILM
Pachiggi! (We Shall Overcome Someday)
Directed by Kazuyuki Izutsu
Written by Daisuke Habara and Kazuyuki Izutsu, based on a novel by Takeshi Matsuyama
Synopsis: A Romeo and Juliet type of love story between two high school kids – one of them Japanese, and the other, a Korean, set against the cultural turmoil of 1968 Kyoto.

Why you should see it: When any film tackles the idea of marginalization and racism in a society, it tends to be moving, but often bleak and dreary. Pachiggi! turns that on its head by still being moving, but also comedic and romantic. Pachiggi! is a brash, loud brawl of a film, a living, breathing celluloid catharsis for Japanese society.
Why being a Facilitator can be so Heartbreaking + Farewell, Ka Bel [1933-2008]

The summer solstice has yet to carve an arc to signal the end of a simmering season, yet I feel like my heart is on the verge of imploding, searing hot with the pain of the past few weeks' events. Never have I felt more disrespected, misunderstood, and taken for a fool. Here are a few of my realizations:

1. No matter how good your intentions may be, how much of yourself that you're sacrificing, you can never please everybody.

2. There is no such thing as a perfect intern; neither is there a perfect facilitator.

3. God always provides great opportunities to test your patience and the strength of a willing back with a heavy load.

4. The Book of Proverbs is correct: spare the rod, spoil the child.

5. Trust, Commitment, and Loyalty are the three most taken for granted concepts.

Despite all these, the infinite capacity of the human heart for forgiveness, perseverance, and love, can make it all seem oh-so-worth it.

***

“Poets, too, must know how to fight.” - Ho Chi...

The abbreviation 'FIBA' derives from the French 'Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur'. The Word 'Amateur' was dropped in 1986 after the distinction between Amateurs and Professionals was eliminated. The 'A' in FIBA was however left. This was for reasons of tradition and also because of the 'BA' at the beginning of our sport, BASKETBALL!

he who is forgiven little, loves little

Parable of Two Debtors

40 And Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 “When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.” 44 Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 “You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. 46 “You did not anoint My
head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 “For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, “Your sins have been for...

Myrtle and J's Wedding: Dec. 16, 2007

Solidum-Godoy nuptials.
Photos from: myrtleandj.multiply.com
Venue: Intramuros

Most of the time, it pays to be punctual. Sometimes, it doesn't.
This was the first Christian wedding I've ever been to. For the bride, There's nothing more special than having your own "daddy" as your solemnizing officer (eep, Family Code?).
Myrtle was such a beautiful bride, I really felt so proud of her. Grace under pressure, indeed! Back in 1998, I didn't like J for her because of every juvenile detail high school kids can think of. Who would've thought that they'd end up together after all?
Congratulations to Myrtle and J!

The new prime minister of Pakistan was only 35 years old, intelligent, Harvard + Oxford educated, and a Muslim woman! A first for an Islamic state that was rocked by armed conflict and racial tensions. It was the year of the Dragon and I spent most of my time reading whatever newsprint I could salvage from my dad's morning routine. It was the same year when Lolo Ismael, my maternal grandfather, came to visit and tell us how young women were supposed to behave.

At age 6, when people ask little girls what they'd want to when they grew up, the standard responses include secretaries, nurses, teachers, doctors and lawyers.
